Move money between your budgets

Move money from home to your business (or back, or between two businesses) with the right name: a contribution, a loan, a repayment, a salary, or groceries paid from the till. It is recorded in both budgets at once.

When you keep home and your business in separate budgets (My businesses), money moves between them: one month you put money into the shop, another you lend it money for the rent, and one day you pay the home groceries from the till. Move to another budget records it in both budgets at once, with the right name, so the business doesn't count your own money as a sale and home knows what it is owed.

You need at least two budgets: home and a business, or two businesses. It is part of the Business plan (open to everyone during the free trial).

How to do it

  1. Open Accounts and tap the account the money comes out of. Tap Move to another budget. You can also start in More › My business, with Move money.
  2. Choose what happened. That decides how it looks on each side.
  3. Choose the budget and account it leaves from, and the budget and account it goes to (or, if what you paid was an expense, the category it belongs to).
  4. Write How much? and the date.
  5. Read This is how it will look: it says, with figures, what will happen in each budget. If it's right, tap Move the money.
The Move to another budget sheet: first you choose what happened

Money only leaves from and arrives at money accounts: the bank, cash or a wallet. Not a credit card or a loan: there is no money there, only debt.

What happened, and how each one is recorded

  • I put money into my business — a contribution that doesn't come back. At home it comes out of a category created the first time, «For » (group «My businesses»). In the business it goes to Ready to assign as «Owner contribution» and is not a sale.
  • I lent money to my business — a loan. At home it comes out of «Loans to others» and Loans and IOUs shows that the business owes you; in the business it goes to Ready to assign and its own Loans and IOUs shows the debt. Not a sale.
  • My business paid me back — lowers the debt on both sides. In the business it comes out of «Loan repayments»; at home it goes to Ready to assign. It can't be more than what is owed.
  • I paid myself a salary — as in Pay myself a salary. It is the only one your split rules (like a tithe) treat as home income.
  • I paid something for home with business money — in the business, an «Owner withdrawal» (not a business cost). At home, the expense lands in its category (Groceries) without any home account going down, and Ready to assign goes up by the same amount.
  • I paid something for the business with my money — Presupeso asks whether it was A contribution or A loan. In the business, the expense lands in its category and it is a business cost.
  • I moved money between my budgets — a transfer between two budgets of the same kind, from Ready to assign to Ready to assign.

The first time you pay something for one budget with another budget's money, Presupeso creates an account called Paid by my businesses (at home) or Paid by the owner (in the business). The money comes in and the expense goes out on the same day for the same amount, so it always stays at 0. Don't record anything there by hand: Presupeso won't let you.

See both sides, correct and undo

Every move leaves two or more transactions, one in each budget, and they go together. Tap any of them in Transactions to see what happened on each side, See the other side to open the other budget's transaction, Correct both sides to change the amount, date or note on both budgets at once, and Undo both sides to remove everything (with its 4x1000). One side alone can't be deleted. If part of it is already reconciled, Presupeso warns you first.

Sample dataThe contribution in detail: what happened at home and in the business, and the button to see the other side

If the currencies differ, the sheet asks How much arrived?. The 4x1000 is only charged on the account the money leaves, and only if it has it switched on.

What I put in and took out: the report for your accountant

In More › My business, What I put in and took out shows month by month what you put in (contributions and loans) and what you took out (salaries, withdrawals for home and repayments), plus what the business still owes you. Download for the accountant gives you a CSV. It is what went through Presupeso, in cash; your accountant decides how to book it.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just record it as income in the business?

Because the business would count it as a sale, and a slow month would look like a good one.

Contribution or loan? I don't know which one

Ask yourself whether you expect the business to pay you back. If yes, it is a loan; if not, a contribution.
